NINGBO, China, Oct. 31 (Xinhua) -- DPR Korea's Ri Ryong Hyon claimed gold in the men's 75kg category at the IWF World Championships here on Saturday, while Indonesia's Abdullah Rahmat Erwin took silver after climbing from fifth place following the snatch.
Ri lifted 155kg and 160kg on his first two snatch attempts. Although he failed his third attempt at 162kg, which would have equaled the world record, he still finished atop the snatch standings. He followed with 205kg in the clean and jerk to finish first in that discipline as well, securing the overall title with a 365kg total, just one kilogram short of the world record.
After lifting 157kg, Abdullah skipped his third snatch attempt, leaving him fifth after the opening discipline. A 202kg clean and jerk brought his total to 359kg and lifted him to silver overall.
On his final attempt, Abdullah went for 207kg, a weight above the world record. In a dramatic twist, he rushed onto the platform from backstage with only five seconds remaining. He was unable to complete the lift under the time pressure.
"I already knew it's too late to lift, I don't have time to focus," said Abdullah. When asked by reporters if he would have succeeded with more time, Abdullah gave a confident reply: "I think I could."
Thailand's Wichuma Weeraphon claimed bronze with a 155kg snatch and a 200kg clean and jerk for a total of 355kg. ■
