CAIRO, Oct. 31 (Xinhua) -- At least 10 people were killed and 24 others injured when a lorry collided with a microbus on a highway in Giza Governorate, south of the Egyptian capital, on Saturday, according to a statement by the Ministry of Health and Population.
The ministry said hospitals near the accident site and in surrounding areas had been ordered to raise their alert levels and mobilize medical resources to provide the necessary care to the injured.
The Egyptian Ambulance Authority dispatched 20 ambulances to the scene immediately after receiving the emergency report, transporting the injured to nearby hospitals.
Ten of the injured are in unstable condition, while the other 14 sustained minor to moderate injuries, the ministry said, adding that the figures remain preliminary as follow-up operations continue.
Preliminary investigations indicate that excessive speed amid foggy weather may have contributed to the accident, local media reported.
Road accidents claim thousands of lives in Egypt every year, often due to speeding, traffic violations and poor road conditions. In recent years, the country has been upgrading its road network to improve traffic flow and enhance road safety. ■
