DAMASCUS, Oct. 29 (Xinhua) -- At least five people, including four children, have been killed and five others remain missing after heavy rainfall triggered flash floods across several Syrian provinces, the country's emergency and disaster management authorities said in a statement on Thursday.

The ministry said the fatalities were reported in rural areas of Raqqa and Deir al-Zour provinces, while five people remain missing in rural parts of Raqqa, Deir al-Zour and Aleppo provinces.

Search operations are continuing to locate the missing, it added.

Syrian Civil Defense teams have rescued 25 people trapped by floodwaters or stranded in vehicles in the provinces of Raqqa, Deir al-Zour and Homs.

The floods have inundated agricultural land, damaged roads and bridges, and disrupted transportation in affected areas. In Raqqa province, muddy floodwaters swept through low-lying areas, submerging farmland and agricultural facilities, while sections of bridges and roads were damaged by rushing water.

The latest casualties highlight the impact of the heavy rainfall and flash floods on communities across northern and eastern Syria. ■
