PANAMA CITY, Oct. 29 (Xinhua) -- Haiti's Provisional Electoral Council on Wednesday rescheduled the first round of the country's presidential election for July 18, 2027, postponing it from Dec. 13 this year, according to reports from Port-au-Prince, Haiti's capital.

Under the revised timetable, legislative elections will take place on the same day, with runoffs and local elections scheduled for Oct. 4, 2027.

The council already announced plans to revise the timetable in an Oct. 5 notice that postponed the start of first-round campaigning, which had been due to begin that day.

Haiti has been without an elected president since Jovenel Moise was assassinated in July 2021. Efforts to hold elections have repeatedly stalled amid a prolonged political crisis and widespread gang violence.

A Transitional Presidential Council established in April 2024 exercised presidential powers until its mandate expired on Feb. 7 this year. Those powers then passed to the Council of Ministers, led by Prime Minister Alix Didier Fils-Aime. ■
