ANKARA, Oct. 29 (Xinhua) -- A fairy chimney collapsed Thursday in Cappadocia, a tourist hub in central Türkiye, killing two people and injuring another, Nevsehir Governor Huseyin Kok told private broadcaster NTV.
The incident occurred near the entrance to the Goreme Open-Air Museum and was caused by heavy rainfall in recent days, Kok said.
Health and rescue teams were dispatched to the scene.
Cappadocia is renowned for its fairy chimneys, which are tall, thin rock spires shaped like mushrooms, cones or towers formed over millions of years by wind and water eroding volcanic rock.
The region's landscape features valleys, rock-hewn churches, cave dwellings, and underground cities, reflecting its rich geological and cultural history, and attracting tens of thousands of foreign visitors each year. ■
