TBILISI, Oct. 28 (Xinhua) -- The Georgian appeals court on Wednesday approved plea agreements for four defendants in a case linked to an attempt to storm the presidential palace during anti-government protests, local broadcaster Imedi TV reported.

The four defendants admitted guilt and expressed remorse and are scheduled to be released from prison on Nov. 5, the broadcaster said.

Another four defendants, who also admitted guilt, have applied to the Prosecutor's Office for similar agreements.

The case stems from events on Oct. 4, 2025, when municipal elections were held across Georgia. A protest in the capital escalated into clashes, with a group of demonstrators attempting to storm the presidential palace.

Authorities later detained five opposition figures, including Paata Burchuladze, a prominent public figure, on charges of plotting to overthrow the government.

The Georgian government has described the events as a failed coup attempt backed from abroad. Prime Minister Irakli Kobakhidze has called the protests "an attempted overthrow of the constitutional order." ■
