ULAN BATOR, Oct. 29 (Xinhua) -- A 35-year-old herder was injured in a bear attack in Mongolia's northern province of Darkhan-Uul on Thursday, local media reported.

The incident occurred on Thursday morning in Bayangol soum (an administrative subdivision), where the herder rode his motorcycle to a spot about 200 meters from his home after hearing a calf mooing.

The bear had seized the calf and attacked the herder, according to reports.

"The herder was brought to the local health center in a state of shock, with deep claw wounds to his head, upper arm and back," the soum's health center said in a statement.

Bear sightings in and around residential areas across Mongolia have been reported in recent months, prompting authorities to urge the public to remain vigilant and take precautions to minimize the risk of encounters.

Earlier this month, a man in his 40s was killed, and a woman in her 50s was seriously injured in a bear attack in Ulan Bator, the capital of Mongolia.

Experts say encounters between bears and livestock, as well as bear sightings in residential areas, have increased in recent years.

They attribute the trend to several factors, including climate change, food shortages in bears' natural habitats, and the overexploitation of natural resources. ■
