NEW DELHI, Oct. 28 (Xinhua) -- The death toll due to the severe cyclone named "Arnab" rose to 5 on Wednesday in India's southern state of Andhra Pradesh, confirmed the state's Chief Minister N. Chandrababu Naidu.

The deceased fell victim to incidents like falling trees, walls and electric poles, and electrocution.

As a precautionary measure, power supply was cut in many affected areas, and educational institutions, including schools and colleges, were shut for the next couple of days. Over 35 flights were either cancelled or diverted at two airports in Andhra Pradesh.

The severe cyclone with wind speeds of up to 130 kilometres per hour had hit the country's south-eastern and eastern coastal areas in the early hours of Wednesday, particularly parts of Andhra Pradesh before moving upwards to states including Odisha, Jharkhand, Chhattisgarh and West Bengal.

Naidu also announced that crops like coconut and banana in around 71,000 hectares of agricultural land were partially or completely damaged.

Around 57,000 people were moved to relief camps, and nearly 180 houses were damaged, official sources said. ■
