WASHINGTON, Oct. 27 (Xinhua) -- U.S. President Donald Trump announced plans on Tuesday to roll back regulations aimed at curbing methane emissions from oil and gas operations, arguing that the move would reduce costs and boost domestic energy production.
Announcing at a campaign rally in Texas, Trump said that his administration was "terminating" the "Biden-era" rules, which require oil and gas companies to limit methane leaks from drilling operations.
The announcement came as high fuel prices have become a political liability for Trump and Republicans ahead of the midterm elections.
The administration has framed the rollback as a way to ease energy costs, as the U.S. war in Iran continues to put pressure on fuel prices, and has described the plan as a way to lower bills. ■
