TOKYO, Oct. 28 (Xinhua) -- Tokyo stocks closed mixed Wednesday. Artificial intelligence-related shares extended gains as worries about the profitability and sustainability of massive investments in the sector eased, but rising crude oil futures prompted selling in the broader market.
The benchmark Nikkei stock index, the 225-issue Nikkei Stock Average, climbed 685.82 points, or 1.08 percent, from Tuesday to finish at 63,954.19.
The broader Topix index, meanwhile, slipped 5.66 points, or 0.14 percent, to 3,991.71.
Heavyweight AI- and semiconductor-related shares tracked their U.S. counterparts higher, with upbeat details in the initial public offering prospectus of U.S. AI company Anthropic drawing buyers to the Tokyo market for a second straight session.
Many other sectors, however, ended lower. West Texas Intermediate crude futures topped 100 U.S. dollars per barrel, pushing up Japanese government bond yields and weighing on the market.
Trading was also tempered by a wait-and-see mood ahead of policy decisions by the U.S. Federal Reserve and the Bank of Japan, both due later this week, analysts said. ■
