CAIRO, Oct. 28 (Xinhua) -- The Arab League on Wednesday called for an end to outside interference in Sudan and urged support for an inclusive, Sudanese-led national dialogue to help end the country's devastating war.

"Support the Sudanese people rather than become parties to the fighting and destruction," the Cairo-based, pan-Arab organization said in a statement following Secretary-General Nabil Fahmy's visit to Khartoum on Monday.

During the visit, Fahmy met with Abdel Fattah Al-Burhan, chairman of Sudan's Transitional Sovereign Council, members of a committee preparing for national dialogue, and representatives of political and civil groups and community leaders, the statement said.

"Peace cannot be imposed on the Sudanese from outside," the Arab League said, stressing that national dialogue should involve Sudanese at home and abroad rather than be limited to a few parties or elites.

Fahmy reaffirmed the Arab League's support for Sudan's unity, sovereignty, territorial integrity and national institutions, expressing the organization's readiness to help facilitate an inclusive, Sudanese-led national dialogue as soon as possible, according to the statement.

The organization also expressed readiness to provide political and technical support, mobilize humanitarian and development assistance, and back recovery and reconstruction projects in coordination with Sudanese state institutions, the statement said.

"Sudan does not need anyone to determine its future or arrangements that prolong the war," the Arab League said, calling for respect for the will of the Sudanese people, an end to bloodshed and the restoration of normal life.

Sudan has been embroiled in an armed conflict between the Sudanese Armed Forces and the paramilitary Rapid Support Forces since April 2023, leaving tens of thousands dead and millions displaced, both inside and outside the country. ■
