SYDNEY, Oct. 28 (Xinhua) -- An Indian national is facing deportation from Australia after being charged by police for allegedly falsely claiming he was injured in the Bondi terror attack.
The police force in the state of New South Wales said in a statement on Wednesday that the 46-year-old man allegedly made a false statement that he was injured in the December 2025 fatal mass shooting at Bondi Beach and made subsequent fraudulent claims for compensation.
He was arrested on Tuesday and charged with publishing false or misleading material to obtain an advantage and false representation, resulting in a police investigation.
Under a state government scheme, victims who were hit by shrapnel or gunfire during the mass shooting are eligible for a lump sum payment of 35,000 Australian dollars (24,612.3 U.S. dollars).
Local media, which identified the man as an Indian national in Australia on an expired visa, reported that he was detained by the border force officials shortly after his arrest and transported to an immigration detention center.
The Sydney Morning Herald reported that he is expected to be held in detention until the conclusion of criminal proceedings, when he will face deportation. ■
