KUALA LUMPUR, Oct. 27 (Xinhua) -- One member of the Malaysian Maritime Enforcement Agency (MMEA) was killed while three others were injured during an operation at a coastal area located in Perlis state, the agency said on Tuesday.
The incident occurred at 11 p.m. local time on Monday when the boat carrying the agency's personnel collided with rocks during an enforcement operation to intercept a boat carrying illegal migrants, Kedah and Perlis MMEA director Romli Mustafa told a press briefing.
He said the suspected migrant boat sped towards the shore after being detected, triggering a 15-minute pursuit before the MMEA boat collided with rocks.
"The impact threw three of the five personnel overboard, including one who was reported missing. He was found floating in the sea at about 1:30 a.m. today (Tuesday), unconscious, and was pronounced dead," he said. ■
