CHENGDU, Oct. 27 (Xinhua) -- Wang Huimin, previously a senior discipline inspector at the China Securities Regulatory Commission (CSRC), was on Tuesday sentenced to death with a two-year reprieve for accepting bribes.

After the two-year reprieve period expires, the sentence will be lawfully commuted to life imprisonment without commutation of sentence or parole, according to a verdict from the Intermediate People's Court of Chengdu in southwest China's Sichuan Province.

Wang was head of a discipline inspection and supervision team sent by the Central Commission for Discipline Inspection of the Communist Party of China and the National Commission of Supervision, the country's top anti-graft agency, to the CSRC. He is also a former member of the Party Committee of the CSRC.

The court further ordered that Wang be deprived of his political rights for life and that all his personal property be confiscated.

From 1998 to 2025, Wang took advantage of his official positions in Xinjiang Uygur Autonomous Region and at the CSRC to provide assistance to relevant units and individuals in matters such as business operations and fund-raising. In return, he illegally accepted money and property totaling more than 436 million yuan (about 64.88 million U.S. dollars), the verdict noted.

Wang's bribery amount was particularly huge, while his conduct caused especially significant losses to the interests of the state and the people, for which his crimes warranted the death penalty in principle, the court said.

However, Wang truthfully confessed his crimes after being taken into custody, voluntarily disclosed criminal facts not yet known to the investigators, admitted his guilt and showed remorse, while some of the bribery offenses were attempted rather than completed. Part of the bribes he received had been recovered. The court thus imposed a lenient sentence on him, the verdict explained.

The case was heard publicly by the court on July 17. During the trial, prosecutors presented evidence, while Wang and his defense counsel cross-examined the evidence and made their arguments. Wang made a final statement in court, pleading guilty and expressing remorse. ■
