TRIPOLI, Oct. 26 (Xinhua) -- Libya's Transport Minister Mohammed Al-Shahoubi said Monday that the International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO) had lifted air safety warnings concerning Libyan airspace.
In a statement, Al-Shahoubi said the decision followed years of efforts by the government to develop the aviation sector and strengthen air safety and security standards, describing the decision as a significant national achievement.
He said that the government would launch a promotional program targeting international airlines to encourage them to resume direct flights to Libya, as well as make greater use of Libyan airspace as an air corridor linking Europe and Africa.
ICAO issued warnings in 2013 and 2015 over Libyan airspace safety concerns, citing insecurity after the 2011 armed conflict in the country.
Also on Monday, Abdallah Al Dardari, United Nations Development Programme regional director for Arab States, met with Lybian Economy and Trade Minister Suhail Abushiha and discussed economic reforms and joint development initiatives in the country. ■
