AMMAN, Oct. 27 (Xinhua) -- Jordan will form a joint committee with Syria to follow up its recent strikes against Islamic State (IS) targets in southern Syria and strengthen coordination in combating terrorism, Jordanian government spokesperson Mohammad Al Momani said Tuesday.
Momani, also the minister of government communication, said preliminary results indicate the Jordanian air forces' strikes on Monday had killed over 20 IS members and destroyed a large weapons depot belonging to the group.
He said Jordan values its relations with Syria and is committed to coordinating efforts to address shared challenges, including the threat posed by IS.
The spokesperson expressed regret over civilian casualties reported after the strikes, saying Jordan had refrained from targeting sites where intelligence indicated civilians were present.
He said Jordanian authorities were following up on the matter with their Syrian counterparts, adding that Jordan supports Syria's security and unity.
Syrian state media reported Monday that seven civilians, including three children, three men and a woman, had been killed in the Jordanian airstrikes on Syria's southern Daraa province. Syrian authorities rejected Jordan's claim that the strikes had been coordinated in advance. ■
