GENEVA, Oct. 27 (Xinhua) -- International Olympic Committee President Kirsty Coventry arrived in Senegal on Tuesday ahead of the Dakar 2026 Youth Olympic Games, the organization announced.

"It is time for Africa; it's time for Senegal!" Coventry was quoted as saying by the IOC.

"It's been a long time; we're very excited. We know it's going to be fabulous. The energy is really good. I know Senegal is going to do an incredible job of welcoming the world and the world's athletes to come and share in our African traditions and our excitement. We're very proud of that," Coventry said on her arrival in Senegal's capital.

The tournament begins on October 31, bringing 2,665 young athletes competing across 153 medal events in Dakar, as well as nearby Diamniadio and Saly.

"We're very proud of the team," Coventry said. "The volunteers make everything. It's such a warm welcome, and I think volunteers bring such a special aspect to a Youth Olympic Games.

"We're feeling that energy now, so thank you all for volunteering. Thank you for making these Games so special." ■
