KABUL, Oct. 27 (Xinhua) -- Afghanistan's Foreign Minister Mawlawi Amir Khan Muttaqi on Tuesday described illicit drugs as an international problem, calling on the international community to help Afghanistan overcome the challenge.
Illicit crop cultivation and drug production are not confined to a specific geographical area, and the fight against this menace is a shared responsibility of Afghanistan and the international community, Muttaqi said at a gathering attended by Kabul-based diplomats and government officials.
As part of efforts to combat the drug menace in Afghanistan, Muttaqi urged the international community to help farmers switch to alternative crops, cooperate in providing treatment for drug addicts, and assist in combating drug trafficking networks.
Although Afghanistan has made significant progress in combating illicit drugs in the post-war period, sharply reducing poppy cultivation, drug production and processing, and trafficking, the country still needs more time to become drug-free. ■
