KHARTOUM, Oct. 26 (Xinhua) -- The paramilitary Rapid Support Forces (RSF) launched drone attacks on Monday against five power stations in central and eastern Sudan, cutting electricity to large areas across four states, according to an official statement.

Sudan Electricity Holding Company, a state-owned enterprise, said the attacks targeted two power stations in Gedaref State and one each in Sinnar, White Nile and Gezira states.

The attacks caused extensive damage to equipment, resulting in a complete power outage across the southeastern electricity grid and disrupting supplies in the four states, the company said.

It warned that the damage threatened the stability of the national grid and said engineering and technical teams had been dispatched to assess the damage and begin repairs.

Meanwhile, an eyewitness told Xinhua that drones targeted a power station near Wad Madani, the capital of Gezira State, before dawn on Monday. The witness added that air defenses of the Sudanese Armed Forces (SAF) shot down drones flying near fuel depots in an area about nine km from the city.

The attacks and the extent of the damage could not be independently verified, and the RSF had not commented.

Sudan has been mired in an armed conflict between the SAF and the RSF since mid-April 2023, which has claimed tens of thousands of lives and displaced millions both domestically and abroad. ■
