MAPUTO, Oct. 26 (Xinhua) -- A photo exhibition marking the 81st anniversary of Taiwan's restoration to China was held on Sunday at the Mozambique-China Cultural Center in Maputo, the capital of Mozambique.
Under the theme "Remembering Taiwan's Restoration, Advancing National Reunification," the event brought together hundreds of participants, including political figures, scholars, members of the Chinese community and students from China and Mozambique. Chinese Ambassador to Mozambique Zheng Xuan and former Mozambican President Joaquim Chissano attended the event.
Speaking at the event, Chissano said the anniversary represents an important part of China's national identity and is closely linked to the one-China policy, adding that the Joaquim Chissano Foundation respects China's official position and the significance of the anniversary for the Chinese people.
Drawing on Mozambique's experience of struggling for independence and building peace, Chissano emphasized the importance of national sovereignty and territorial integrity, expressing hope that efforts toward China's peaceful reunification would proceed through dialogue and mutual understanding.
Isau Meneses, Mozambique's secretary of state for science and higher education, speaking on behalf of Minister of Education and Culture Edson Macuacua, said the exhibition underscored the importance of preserving historical memory and promoting cultural exchanges.
He highlighted the longstanding cooperation between Mozambique and China in education and culture, particularly in professional training, scholarships and academic exchanges, saying such cooperation helps strengthen mutual trust and friendship between the two peoples.
Luis Canhemba, director of Mozambique's Information Office, said the exhibition provided an opportunity to deepen understanding of Chinese history and culture, highlighting the role of historical memory in shaping national identity.
The exhibition featured historical photographs documenting Taiwan's restoration to China. The Maputo event was part of a series of commemorative photo exhibitions held in five African countries, including Kenya, Tanzania, South Africa and Nigeria. ■
