SYDNEY, Oct. 26 (Xinhua) -- A man has been found dead in floodwaters in the southern region of the Australian state of Queensland following widespread intense rainfall over several days.
The Queensland Police Service said that emergency services were called to reports that a man was located unresponsive in floodwaters near the small town of Boompa, 225 km north of Brisbane, shortly after 11 a.m. local time on Monday.
Crews arrived and he was declared deceased at the scene.
Police have commenced an investigation into the death.
Local media reported that the 57-year-old man was swept away while trying to drive through a flooded road.
Large parts of southern Queensland have been affected by flooding since Thursday due to a series of slow-moving storms that have brought intense rainfall, prompting school closures and several emergency rescues.
A group of six people was rescued on Monday morning after becoming stranded by floodwaters at a campground in Leyburn, 155 km southwest of Brisbane.
Police on Monday issued a reminder for people to avoid unnecessary risks around floodwaters and to never drive through floodwater. ■
