OTTAWA, Oct. 24 (Xinhua) -- Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney issued a statement on Saturday marking United Nations Day, emphasizing that the founding principles of the UN Charter have never been more important and pledging Canada's continued efforts to uphold them.
Recalling the founding of the UN more than 80 years ago in the aftermath of the Second World War, Carney noted that the post-war order is eroding and that the underlying logic that justified multilateral cooperation is more compelling than ever.
Addressing growing global threats, including the climate emergency, rapid advances in artificial intelligence, and armed conflicts, Carney stressed that "cooperation is not an ideal, it is a necessity" in this fragmented world.
"No country, no matter how powerful, can manage these challenges alone," he added.
Carney highlighted that the UN remains the only global platform bringing together 193 member states to promote peace and security, uphold international law, and protect human rights.
The key question is not whether multilateralism can survive, but how it must evolve to meet today's challenges, the prime minister said. ■
