XIONGAN, Oct. 23 (Xinhua) -- Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi said on Friday that the Global Governance Initiative has become increasingly relevant one year after it was put forward, calling for efforts to turn its vision into reality.

Chinese President Xi Jinping put forward the Global Governance Initiative, offering a solution to address the governance deficit and jointly create a better future, Wang said in a keynote speech at the opening ceremony of the 2026 Global Governance Forum (Xiongan) in Xiongan New Area, north China's Hebei Province.

Wang, also a member of the Political Bureau of the Communist Party of China Central Committee, said countries should jointly uphold the central role of the United Nations, enhance the Security Council's rapid response capacity, and respond to the legitimate concerns of developing countries.

He said major countries must set an example in upholding equality, credibility, moral principles and cooperation, which is the only way to bring about a world where all countries coexist in harmony and all nations thrive in mutual appreciation.

All parties should adhere to a vision of common, comprehensive, cooperative and sustainable security and resolve differences and disputes between countries through peaceful means to safeguard peace, he said.

It is important to enhance the representation and voice of the Global South in international affairs, advance reform of the international financial system in accordance with the timetable and roadmap agreed by all parties, increase the representation of developing countries in the Security Council, and give full play to the important role of emerging multilateral cooperation mechanisms such as BRICS and the Shanghai Cooperation Organization, Wang said.

All countries should uphold the multilateral trading system with the WTO at its core, keep development at the center of the international agenda, and fully implement the UN 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development, he said.

He also called for improving governance rules in emerging fields, turning new frontiers such as the deep sea, the polar regions and outer space into areas for international cooperation, and evolving an AI governance structure based on general consensus soon.

Hosted by the Chinese People's Institute of Foreign Affairs, the forum is themed "Rebuilding Confidence and Cooperation: Reforming and Improving Global Governance in a Transforming World."

Nearly 400 representatives from strategic, political, academic, business, media, and youth sectors from more than 90 countries and international and regional organizations, including the UN, attended the opening ceremony. ■
