MADRID, Oct. 23 (Xinhua) -- Tensions are rising at La Liga club Getafe after coach Jose Bordalas accused the club of breaking its promises and failing to build a squad strong enough to compete in domestic and European competitions.
Bordalas made his comments after his side suffered a 5-2 home defeat to Swiss side FC Lugano in the UEFA Conference League on Thursday night.
He said the defeat highlighted the lack of depth in Getafe's squad as the club competes in the Conference League, La Liga and the Copa del Rey this season.
"The squad isn't enough to play in three competitions; it doesn't have enough for even one," Bordalas complained at his post-match press conference.
There had been speculation that Bordalas could leave the club this summer, but he eventually signed a new contract on June 10, extending his deal until June 2028. He had previously said he had been promised reinforcements.
"I feel conned: the promises that were made to me have not been kept," Bordalas added.
His comments drew an angry response from Getafe president Angel Torres in an interview with Spanish radio station Cadena SER.
"You have to have some serious nerve to tell me, after 30 years in charge, that I've deceived him. I haven't deceived anyone," Torres responded.
"He (Bordalas) signed his contract because he wanted to," Torres continued. "What I don't understand is why he is here if he is so unhappy. The door is open for him to leave."
"If we at Getafe are truly that bad, well, what can you do?" he added.
Getafe's next game is away to Athletic Bilbao on Sunday, with Athletic looking to end a run of four games without a win. ■
