BAGHDAD, Oct. 21 (Xinhua) -- Iraqi security forces seized 600,000 Captagon pills and arrested two drug traffickers during a security operation in the eastern province of Diyala, Iraq's General Directorate of Narcotics and Psychotropic Substances Affairs said Wednesday.
The operation was carried out in the Khanaqin district in Diyala through a joint effort by the anti-narcotics directorates of Anbar and Diyala provinces, intercepting illicit pills weighing roughly 105 kg before they could be smuggled to a neighboring country, the directorate said in a statement.
The directorate emphasized its ongoing commitment to dismantling cross-border smuggling networks and curbing the illegal drug trade with judicial backing, according to the statement.
Years of chaos and conflict following the 2003 U.S.-led invasion have hindered Iraq's efforts to combat narcotics. The Iraqi government has stated that drug trafficking remains a key source of funding for terrorism and organized crime. ■
