VIENTIANE, Oct. 22 (Xinhua) -- The second ordinary session of the 10th Lao National Assembly concluded on Wednesday with lawmakers approving key government reports, as well as eight draft laws aimed at strengthening governance and modernizing the country's legal framework.

At the closing ceremony, President of the Lao National Assembly (NA) Sonexay Siphandone said lawmakers had reviewed and approved reports on the implementation of the 2026 national socio-economic development plan, the state budget plan, and the monetary plan, as well as targets for 2027. The decisions will guide the government's priorities in economic development, public financial management, and monetary policy, Lao News Agency reported on Thursday.

A key outcome was the approval of eight draft laws, including a new law on deposit protection and amendments to seven existing laws covering the government, Lao People's Army officers, Lao People's Public Security Forces, civil aviation, road traffic, cybercrime prevention and countermeasures, and alcoholic beverage control.

The legislative package addresses public administration, national security, transport, digital safety, and financial protection. The new deposit protection law is expected to strengthen safeguards in the financial sector, while the amendments aim to update legislation governing key institutions and public activities.

The session's outcomes highlight the NA's role in overseeing government performance, strengthening public financial management, and advancing legal reforms to support Laos' socio-economic development. Lawmakers emphasized the importance of maintaining stability, promoting economic growth, and gradually improving living standards nationwide. ■
