DAKAR, Oct. 22 (Xinhua) -- Senegalese trade union confederations pledged Wednesday to take the Dakar 2026 Youth Olympic Games into account when planning further industrial action to avoid disrupting the event, scheduled for Oct. 31 to Nov. 13.
The commitment followed a meeting between Mamadou Diagna Ndiaye, president of the Dakar 2026 Organizing Committee, and a delegation of trade union confederations led by Mody Guiro, according to a joint statement issued Wednesday evening.
The confederations urged their members to factor the Games into an action plan to be drawn up following the ongoing 72-hour general strike, "so as to avoid any disruption throughout the Games," the statement said.
Both sides stressed the importance of a collective effort to support the event, while union representatives reaffirmed their commitment to defending workers' interests.
The three-day general strike began Wednesday at the call of an alliance of trade unions protesting delays in implementing agreements with the government and a deterioration in social dialogue. The government had urged the unions to suspend the strike and pursue talks. ■
