WELLINGTON, Oct. 21 (Xinhua) -- New Zealand's greenhouse gas emissions from industries and households fell 2.9 percent in the June 2026 quarter, driven mainly by declines in manufacturing and household transport, official data showed Wednesday.
Greenhouse gas emissions from industries and households decreased by 550 kilotons during the quarter, according to the national statistics agency Stats NZ.
Manufacturing emissions fell 6.4 percent, or 126 kilotons, driven by decreases in petroleum, chemical, polymer and rubber product manufacturing, which dropped 49.4 percent, and food, beverage and tobacco product manufacturing, down 13.4 percent, statistics showed.
Household greenhouse gas emissions fell 5.3 percent, or 106 kilotons, with transport emissions decreasing 5.7 percent, or 101 kilotons, Stats NZ said in a statement.
"The fall in greenhouse gas emissions from household transport coincided with a fall in fuel retail sales volumes for the June 2026 quarter," Stats NZ environment statistics spokesperson Tehseen Islam was quoted as saying.
The decreases were partially offset by an 8.4-percent rise in emissions from the electricity, gas, water and waste services industry, driven by a 22.2-percent increase in emissions from electricity generation and gas supply, Stats NZ said.
For the year ending June 2026, greenhouse gas emissions from industries and households fell 2.9 percent to 75,042 kilotons. The annual decline was mainly driven by a 30.5-percent fall in emissions from the electricity, gas, water and waste services industry, reflecting decreases in the September and December 2025 quarters, the agency said. ■
