GAZA, Oct. 20 (Xinhua) -- A Palestinian man and his wife were killed in an Israeli airstrike targeting a residential apartment in Gaza City on Tuesday, Palestinian medical and local sources said.
Local eyewitnesses said an Israeli aircraft fired a missile at an apartment west of Al-Shifa hospital, setting it on fire and causing extensive damage.
Medical sources told Xinhua that the couple was killed in the strike and their bodies were taken to the hospital. Local sources identified them as Akram Yassin and his wife, Dina Abu Bakr.
The Israeli military has not commented on the strike.
According to the Gaza-based health authorities, 1,522 Palestinians have been killed and 5,421 others injured in the Gaza Strip since the ceasefire took effect in October 2025.
The death toll since Oct. 7, 2023, has reached 74,480, with 175,539 others injured.
Israeli strikes have continued intermittently in Gaza despite the fragile ceasefire, causing further Palestinian casualties.
Meanwhile, an EU official on Tuesday described attacks by Israeli settlers against Palestinians in the West Bank as "unacceptable," warning that they could have serious repercussions for the overall situation in the territory.
Shadi Othman, media officer at the EU Office in Jerusalem, told the official Voice of Palestine Radio that settler attacks were occurring almost daily across the West Bank.
Othman called on Israel to fulfill its obligations under international law and take concrete measures to stop the attacks, adding the EU has taken some steps in recent months and discussions on further action are ongoing.
At least five people were injured on Monday in 20 attacks carried out by Israeli settlers and soldiers against Palestinian farmers in the West Bank, according to the Wall and Settlement Resistance Commission of the Palestine Liberation Organization. ■
