TOKYO, Oct. 19 (Xinhua) -- Tokyo stocks ended mixed Monday, as renewed concerns over heavy investment in artificial intelligence infrastructure weighed on the Nikkei index, while bargain hunting helped the broader Topix index edge higher.

The benchmark Nikkei stock index, the 225-issue Nikkei Stock Average, ended down 407.59 points, or 0.62 percent, from Friday at 64,916.70, after briefly plunging by over 2 percent.

The broader Topix index, meanwhile, finished 1.48 points, or 0.04 percent, higher at 4,067.48.

Concerns over the financial burden facing companies investing heavily in AI infrastructure, as well as uncertainty over their ability to recoup the costs, resurfaced after shares of U.S. data center operator CoreWeave Inc. fell again. The stock's decline had triggered last week's selloff in AI-related and chip stocks, analysts said.

Market sentiment was also dampened by a surge in West Texas Intermediate crude oil futures to above 100 U.S. dollars per barrel.

Meanwhile, bargain hunting emerged after the Nikkei briefly fell below the 64,000 mark, helping the Topix recover and finish in positive territory. ■
