LOS ANGELES, Oct. 17 (Xinhua) -- Two people, including a 6-year-old boy, were killed and 10 others injured after a truck drove through a soccer game in the U.S. state of Kansas on Saturday, local police confirmed.
The other victim, a 35-year-old man, was pronounced dead at the scene, Wichita Police Capt. Aaron Moses told a news conference Saturday evening.
The incident occurred at around 3:25 p.m. local time (2025 GMT) at Stryker Sports Complex in Wichita, Kansas, according to the Wichita Police Department. A youth soccer game was taking place at the field.
The driver, a 34-year-old woman, remained at the scene and was taken into custody following the incident, Moses said. Two juveniles were also inside the vehicle at the time.
The woman "has been cooperative up to this point in the investigation," Moses added.
The injured include five children, aged 5 to 9, and five adults aged 28 to 68. Officials believe none of the injuries are life-threatening.
The City of Wichita said all events at Stryker Sports Complex had been canceled until further notice and urged the public to avoid the venue to allow emergency personnel to carry out their work.
The Kansas State High School Activities Association said play in the state flag football championship had been suspended following the incident.
Wichita Mayor Lily Wu called the incident "an unimaginable tragedy" in a social media post, adding that "What should have been a joyful Saturday afternoon watching children play soccer ended in heartbreak."
Police said the investigation was ongoing and urged anyone with video footage of the incident to submit it to investigators. ■
