NEW DELHI, Oct. 18 (Xinhua) -- Nearly a dozen people, including several women, died, and around 30 were injured when a truck moving at high speed mowed down a group of devotees near a temple in India's central state of Madhya Pradesh during the night intervening Saturday and Sunday, local police said on Sunday.
The incident was reported in Madhya Pradesh's Gwalior city, near the famous Sheetla Mata temple.
The injured were admitted to a local hospital. Many among the injured were said to be in critical condition.
The truck was said to be loaded with paddy. The driver lost control of the truck, which crashed into the police barricades and rammed into a group of devotees walking on the road towards the temple, before coming to a halt after hitting the temple's wall, a senior police officer said.
The death toll was feared to rise. ■
