NEW DELHI, Oct. 17 (Xinhua) -- One girl died and 25 students were injured when a large overhead lighting pole collapsed on them while they were dancing at a Dandiya event at a college in India's southern state of Telangana on Saturday evening, local police confirmed.
The incident occurred at MVSR Engineering College in the state's Ranga Reddy district.
Dandiya events are being held in major cities across India amid the ongoing festive season, with participants dancing into the evening.
Media reports said the heavy metal lighting structure mounted above the dance area suddenly collapsed, leaving students little time to escape.
The incident also triggered a fire at the venue, causing panic and chaos among the students.
Those injured were admitted to a local hospital, with some reportedly in critical condition. ■
