ISLAMABAD, Oct. 17 (Xinhua) -- Pakistani security forces killed the alleged mastermind of a suicide attack on the old Kohat Police Lines in a joint intelligence-based operation in the country's northwest Khyber Pakhtunkhwa province, police said Friday.
The Counter-Terrorism Department (CTD) of the police said Zahid Gul, a commander of the Gul Bahadur group, was killed in the operation in the frontier region of Lakki Marwat.
Gul had personally guided the explosive-laden vehicle used in the attack on Sept. 18, which had killed 17 policemen and six civilians, according to the statement.
He was also involved in other terrorist incidents, including a bank robbery in which 6 million Pakistani rupees (about 21,000 U.S. dollars) were looted, the CTD said.
The department added that Gul had also planned an attack on the new Kohat Police Lines about two months ago, which was foiled. A Pakistan Air Force installation and the Police Training School in Kohat were among his next targets, it said.
Other members of the network are already in the custody of security agencies, the CTD said. ■
