BEIJING, Oct. 17 (Xinhua) -- Here are the latest Chinese sports headlines from the past week:
1. Zheng Qinwen claims maiden WTA 1000 title at China Open
China's Zheng Qinwen captured the women's singles title at the 2026 China Open on October 11, defeating fourth-seeded Russian Mirra Andreeva 7-5, 6-4 in the final to claim her maiden WTA 1000 crown.
The victory also made Zheng the first Chinese player to win the singles title at the China Open.
Since winning Olympic gold at the Paris 2024 Games, a persistent right elbow injury has disrupted Zheng's career and required surgery in July 2025. Her ranking subsequently fell from a career-high No. 4 in 2024 to as low as No. 160 in mid-June 2026.
One day after her historic triumph in Beijing, the WTA announced Zheng's withdrawal from the Wuhan Open due to a right shoulder injury.
2. China's Wang retains women's singles title at WTT China Smash
China's Wang Manyu successfully defended her women's singles title after defeating Japanese chopper Hitomi Sato 4-0 at the 2026 WTT China Smash on October 11.
Wang had a 6-1 head-to-head record against Sato, although their most recent meeting, and their only previous encounter in the WTT Series, saw Sato win 3-0 in the round of 32 at the 2026 WTT United States Smash three months ago.
Wang stormed to an 11-2 win in the opening game. With the top seed leading 9-8 in the second, the expedite rule came into effect, under which the server must win the point within 13 strokes or the receiver is awarded the point.
Wang then won two consecutive points to take the second game 11-8 before prevailing 11-3, 11-9 to secure her fourth WTT Grand Smash title.
3. China's outdoor sports participants exceed 500 million

According to statistics from the Sports Economy Department of the General Administration of Sport, outdoor sports are gaining popularity in third- and fourth-tier cities, where strong consumer enthusiasm has driven consumption to 42% of the national total.
Demographically, outdoor sports consumers are relatively evenly distributed across age groups and genders. People aged 19-49 account for 76.16% of all consumers, while women and men make up 50.82% and 49.18%, respectively.
4. Record participation expected at 2027 Winter Universiade in Changchun
A record 3,716 participants from 63 countries and regions have registered for the 2027 Winter Universiade in Changchun, northeast China's Jilin Province, organizers announced on October 14.
The Games, scheduled for January 15 to 25, will feature 97 medal events across 12 disciplines. Organizers said the number of registrations was the highest in Winter Universiade history.
China is assembling a delegation of about 400 members, including approximately 240 athletes, and plans to compete in 11 of the 12 disciplines, with ice hockey the only exception.
Curling competition is scheduled to begin January 12, 2027, three days before the official opening, while popular events including short-track speed skating, speed skating, freestyle skiing and aerials will take place on weekends.
Organizers said cost efficiency and sustainability have been central to preparations, with all 13 competition venues being upgraded from existing facilities rather than built from scratch.
5. Russell scores 21 in CBA debut as Shanghai starts title defense with Shenzhen win
Former NBA All-Star D'Angelo Russell scored 21 points in his Chinese Basketball Association (CBA) league debut as defending champions the Shanghai Sharks cruised past the Shenzhen Aviators 102-68 in the 2026-27 season opener on October 16.
Shanghai maintained its core roster that won the title last season, including Wang Zhelin, Zhang Zhenlin and Brandon Goodwin, and bolstered its squad with the signing of Russell and three-time NBA champion JaVale McGee, who played for the Beijing Ducks last season.
Russell went seven of 23 from the field. Goodwin led Shanghai with 22 points and nine assists. Wang had a double-double of 14 points and 18 rebounds, and Zhang added 16 points.
Both sides struggled a bit in offense in the opening quarter, with Terquavion Smith's two 3-pointers earning Shenzhen a 19-16 lead as the quarter ran out. Shenzhen center Ibou Badji showed his athleticism with two blocks on Goodwin and Russell.
Shanghai broke a 32-32 tie with a 13-0 surge in the final three minutes of the second quarter, before extending its lead to 22 points heading into the final frame.
Li Hongquan's layup helped Shanghai build a 95-66 lead with 3 minutes and 30 seconds remaining, putting the result beyond doubt. ■
