CAIRO, Oct. 14 (Xinhua) -- Germany swept the podium in the men's 25m rapid fire pistol on Wednesday at the International Shooting Sport Federation (ISSF) World Cup Rifle/Pistol in Cairo, with Oliver Geis winning gold after a close contest with compatriot Florian Peter.

Geis finished with 34 hits, narrowly beating Peter's 33, while Emanuel Mueller completed the all-German podium with 28.

The three occupied the top positions after the sixth five-shot series, when Geis led with 26 hits, Peter followed with 25 and Mueller had 24. Italy's Massimo Spinella was eliminated in fourth place with 23 hits.

Mueller then secured bronze after the seventh series, leaving Geis and Peter to battle for gold in the final series, with Geis holding on for a one-hit victory.

Earlier, Peter had topped the qualification round with 592 points, while Mueller qualified third with 583 and Geis fourth with the same score.

Geis' victory followed his gold medal at the World Cup in Hangzhou, China, in July, where he equaled the world record with 35 hits.

Geis said Germany's sweep of the medals had been a shared dream for the team. "It was a big dream for us, and now we've made it," he told Xinhua.

The winner credited the achievement to intensive preparation and strong competition within the German team. "We trained a lot and we trained hard in the team, and now it paid off," he said.

Looking ahead to the World Championships in Doha in November, Geis said, "Maybe I can win another medal there too. I hope so."

Germany coach Detlef Glenz credited the team's success to hard work and intensive training, while acknowledging that a little luck could also play a role in the final.

"The more you practice, the luckier you get," Glenz said. "If you shoot a 9.6, it's no hit. A 9.7 is a hit, so there's a little bit of luck."

Earlier in the day, Armenia's Elmira Karapetyan won the women's 10m air pistol gold with 242.4 points, ahead of Bulgaria's Miroslava Mincheva with 240.2 and France's Camille Jedrzejewski with 219.3. ■
