SANAA, Oct. 12 (Xinhua) -- Yemen's Houthi group said Monday that Saudi Arabia had carried out 119 strikes on several Houthi-held areas over the past 24 hours, while Yemen's government forces reported intensified military operations against the group.
In a statement posted on social media platform X, Houthi military spokesman Yahya Sarea said the strikes targeted the Houthi-held capital Sanaa and the provinces of Al-Jawf, Taiz, Saada, Marib, Lahj, Al-Bayda and Ibb.
Sarea said F-15 and Typhoon fighter jets involved in the attacks had taken off from Saudi air bases in Khamis Mushait and Taif, while missiles were launched from the Saudi border regions of Najran and Jizan.
Meanwhile, Yemeni military spokesperson Majid al-Nuzaili said Monday that government forces had carried out 1,879 "precise and direct" attacks on Houthi military targets in recent hours, claiming that about 950 Houthi fighters had been "neutralized."
Al-Nuzaili said the operations were part of the government's "Dawn of Yemen" offensive, which targeted Houthi positions, command centers and weapon depots.
The latest exchanges came amid a sharp escalation in Yemen's long-running conflict, with fighting intensifying on several fronts and cross-border attacks between the Houthis and Saudi Arabia increasing in recent days.
A Saturday Houthi strike on a passenger terminal at King Khalid International Airport in the Saudi capital Riyadh has killed 12 people and injured 309 others, according to Saudi authorities.
Yemen has been mired in conflict since late 2014, when the Houthis seized the capital Sanaa and much of northern Yemen, prompting a Saudi-led coalition to intervene in 2015 in support of the Yemeni government. The renewed fighting marked a major escalation after a UN-brokered truce in 2022 largely halted major hostilities. ■
