SANAA/RIYADH, Oct. 12 (Xinhua) -- A series of strikes rocked Yemen's Houthi-held capital Sanaa late Monday, with explosions heard across the city, local residents told Xinhua.

Residents reached by phone said several powerful explosions were heard in quick succession across Sanaa.

The targets remained unclear, with no immediate reports of casualties or damage.

The explosions came amid intensifying hostilities in Yemen, where renewed fighting on several fronts has been accompanied by an escalating exchange of cross-border strikes between the Houthi group and Saudi Arabia.

The Saudi-led coalition said late Monday that it had intercepted and destroyed two ballistic missiles launched by the Houthi group toward the southwestern Saudi city of Khamis Mushait.

The Houthi group said earlier in the evening that it had launched a new ballistic missile strike on King Khalid International Airport in the Saudi capital Riyadh, while the Saudi-led coalition said its forces had intercepted and destroyed a Houthi ballistic missile fired toward Riyadh.

A Saturday Houthi strike on the Riyadh airport killed 12 people and injured 309 others, according to Saudi authorities.

Yemen has been mired in conflict since late 2014, when the Houthis seized Sanaa and much of northern Yemen, prompting a Saudi-led coalition to intervene in 2015 in support of the internationally recognized Yemeni government. The renewed hostilities have raised concerns over a return to large-scale warfare after a UN-brokered truce in 2022 largely halted major fighting. ■
