KAMPALA, Oct. 12 (Xinhua) -- Uganda Cranes captain Khalid Aucho has announced his retirement from international football after a 13-year career with the national team.
The midfielder, who plays for Ethiopian Premier League champions Sidama Bunna FC, announced his decision on Monday.
"Today, I officially announce my retirement from international football after an unforgettable 13-year journey representing my country, the Uganda Cranes," said the defensive midfielder in a statement.
Aucho reflected on his time with the national team, expressing gratitude to the coaches, teammates, football administrators and fans who supported him throughout his international career.
He made his international debut on Nov. 30, 2013, and went on to earn 77 caps for Uganda. He also captained the team and represented the country at three editions of the Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON).
"Wearing the black, yellow, and red jersey has been the greatest privilege of my life," he added.
Aucho highlighted Uganda's return to the AFCON after a 38-year absence as one of the defining moments of his career, alongside competing in three editions of the continental tournament and captaining the national team.
"It is now time for a new generation of heroes to step forward, carry the flag and write their own history. I look forward to supporting them as one of Uganda's biggest fans," said Aucho.
Aucho's retirement comes after he was left out of Uganda's squad for two matches against Tunisia and Libya in the 2027 AFCON qualifiers two weeks ago. ■
