GENEVA, Oct. 11 (Xinhua) -- The China-proposed Global Development Initiative (GDI) is notable for its emphasis on practical measures to support and advance development, rather than merely serving as a declaration, according to Carlos Correa, executive director of the South Centre.
The GDI "is not just a declaration, it is a program of work," Correa said in a recent interview with Xinhua on the fifth anniversary of the GDI. "One important element of this initiative is that it has promoted practical measures. The focus on development is very important as well."
Correa said the GDI has made an important contribution to global development cooperation and the United Nations 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development.
In his view, the GDI is inclusive, as it promotes development in all countries without any discrimination or distinction, and is based on the important principles of cooperation, innovation and harmony with nature. "These principles are fundamental to have a better world for all our people to live in."
At a time when many of the Sustainable Development Goals are facing obstacles, the GDI is "very important to keep the focus on the goals to be achieved by the international community and to implement practical measures to achieve them," said Correa.
More than 130 countries and international organizations support the GDI and have participated in cooperation under the initiative, said Correa, noting that the high-level meeting on the GDI held in Beijing in July this year reaffirmed the strong support this initiative enjoys as well as its development direction.
"The GDI and the Chinese government are taking the lead in showing the world that there is an alternative to the approach that seeks to stop others from developing and to adopt unilateral measures to the benefit of just one country. This initiative shows that a different spirit can guide the international community," said Correa.
"Regarding the South Centre, we are very much interested in promoting and being part of these efforts," said Correa.
In his view, this initiative promotes, through programs and financing, South-South cooperation, during which China has shared its experience in areas such as poverty reduction, food security and digital transformation.
Asked what he would like to see for the GDI over the next five years, Correa said, "Just to continue with what is being done and emphasizing the need for international cooperation and solidarity."
Correa also called on all parties to "contribute to the success of this initiative, to expand it and to bring in new actors to enhance South-South cooperation."
Headquartered in Geneva, Switzerland, the South Centre serves as the intergovernmental think tank of the Global South, committed to advancing shared interests among Southern nations. ■
