RIYADH, Oct. 11 (Xinhua) -- Twelve people have been killed and 309 others injured in an attack on King Khalid International Airport in the Saudi capital Riyadh on Saturday afternoon, the Saudi General Authority of Civil Aviation said.

In a statement posted early Sunday on social media platform X, the authority said the fatalities included four Saudi citizens and eight foreign residents -- two Bangladeshis and one each from the United States, Egypt, Jordan, Syria, Palestine and Sudan.

The injured are receiving treatment at several hospitals, with some in serious condition, the authority said, adding that material damage was still being assessed.

Yemen's Houthi group has repeatedly targeted the airport in recent days.

On Saturday evening, Saudi-led coalition spokesperson Turki al-Maliki said that a projectile fell near King Fahd International Airport in the eastern Saudi city of Dammam, without specifying damage or casualties.

The latest attacks came amid an escalation in Yemen, where the Saudi-backed government forces are fighting the Houthis. ■
