NOUAKCHOTT, Oct. 11 (Xinhua) -- Mauritanian President Mohamed Ould Cheikh El Ghazouani appointed a new cabinet on Saturday evening, replacing the ministers of defense, interior, economic affairs and energy, among others, the Mauritanian News Agency reported.
The appointments were made by presidential decree on the proposal of Mauritanian Prime Minister El Moctar Ould Djay, according to the report.
Aissata Ba Yahya, minister and secretary-general of the presidency, announced the cabinet lineup at a press conference at the presidential palace in Nouakchott. The list comprises 29 members, excluding the prime minister.
Ba Ousmane was appointed defense minister, El Moctar Ould Ahmed Bouceif interior minister, Mohamedou Ould M'Haimid minister of economic affairs and development, and Mohamed Ould Abdel Vetah minister of energy and petroleum.
Foreign Minister Mohamed Salem Ould Merzoug and Justice Minister Mohamed Ould Soueidatt retained their posts.
Presenting the cabinet lineup, Ba Yahya said the new government would continue implementing the president's program, strengthen social protection for low-income citizens, promote training and employment for young people, and support development in cities and inland regions.
Ould Djay submitted his government's resignation on Friday morning and was reappointed prime minister later that day, with a mandate to form a new government. The authorities did not give a reason for the resignation. He was first appointed prime minister in August 2024. ■
