2026 Nobel Prize in Literature goes to Canadian writer Anne Carson
Canadian writer Anne Carson has been awarded the 2026 Nobel Prize in Literature, becoming the second Canadian author ever to receive the honor, the Swedish Academy announced on Thursday.
The prize was awarded to Carson "for her bold and inventive oeuvre that, in playful dialogue with the classical tradition, has created new forms for contemporary literature," the academy said.
Trump says U.S. not to attack Iran before Nov. 3 midterms
U.S. President Donald Trump said Thursday that the United States would not attack Iran before the Nov. 3 midterm elections, even as a U.S. blockade remained in place, while describing ongoing talks with Tehran as productive.
"We will not be attacking Iran at any time prior to the Midterm Elections to be held in the United States on November 3rd," Trump wrote on Truth Social.
U.S. gov't proposes 70,000-USD fees for int'l student work program
The U.S. Department of Homeland Security (DHS) on Wednesday proposed a new rule that would impose new fees for F-1 non-immigrant students seeking to participate in Optional Practical Training (OPT), a temporary employment authorization connected to a student's field of study.
The proposed rule would establish a 70,000-U.S.-dollar fee per F-1 non-immigrant student for initial OPT and a 30,000-dollar fee per F-1 non-immigrant student for any subsequent OPT, according to a statement on the department's website.
Israel says British consulate in Jerusalem ends its operations, few diplomats can remain
Israeli Foreign Minister Gideon Sa'ar announced on Thursday that the British consulate in East Jerusalem had ended its operations on Israel's orders and that the consul general and 19 diplomats would leave the country, citing "countermeasures" following British measures against Israel.
The consulate is located in East Jerusalem and is Britain's main diplomatic mission to the Palestinians.
Ukraine says 33 killed in Russian raids on frontline city
Thirty-three people were killed and 18 others injured in Russia's strikes Thursday on the frontline city of Kramatorsk in eastern Ukraine, the State Service for Emergencies reported.
The attacks hit a passenger bus in the city, causing 30 deaths and sparking a fire, the agency said in a statement. In Kramatorsk's Bilenke area, three more were killed in the Russian strikes.■
