Brazilian footballers competing in China's Village Super League have found more than just a place to play, forging friendships with local residents and discovering a shared passion for the game that transcends language and cultural barriers.

GUIYANG, Oct. 9 (Xinhua) -- For Brazilian footballers competing in the International Football Cup of China's Village Super League, known locally as "Cun Chao," the experience of playing in Rongjiang county in southwest China's Guizhou province has meant more than winning matches.

"I love you, Rongjiang. I love you, China. I love you, Brazil," Galaxy United player Akonjom Great Nek shouted as he celebrated a victory with his teammates.

Mateus Pereira Almeida, 23, has visited Rongjiang four times since 2024. A fan of Brazilian star Neymar, he enjoys being called by his idol's name by local residents.

"The 'Cun Chao' atmosphere in Rongjiang is great, just like my hometown Sao Paulo," Pereira said, adding that the warmth of local people made him feel at home.

Launched in Rongjiang in 2023, the grassroots Village Super League has attracted attention in China and abroad for its festive atmosphere and community spirit.

This year's International Football Cup drew 371 players from more than 30 countries and regions, including Brazil, Britain, Cambodia, Rwanda and Nigeria.

Pereira said he was struck by the town's enthusiasm for football, which is reflected in its streets and public spaces.

"Stone bollards are painted like balls, buses carry images of football stars, and murals of famous football players cover the players' tunnel leading from the locker room to the pitch," he said.

Galaxy United goalkeeper Riquelme Richard Lima Nobre expressed similar sentiments. He first visited Rongjiang in 2025 and stayed for about three months.

"I really love Rongjiang for the people's passion for football showing how much the Chinese love this sport," he said.

Nobre keeps photos with local players on his phone and stays in touch with them through Chinese social network WeChat.

"We don't speak the same language, but we still greet each other on holidays," he said. "On the field we are opponents, off the field we are friends, this is what I have learned from 'Cun Chao'."

The competition has also attracted prominent Brazilian football figures, with former stars Kaka and Roberto Carlos visiting Rongjiang in May 2024 and July 2025, respectively.

Pereira said their visits had inspired him and strengthened his connection with the local football community.

Both Pereira and Nobre hope to return for Rongjiang's planned "Cun Chao World Cup" in 2028.

"Rongjiang is my second hometown, and I hope to come back by taking part in the 'Cun Chao World Cup'," Pereira said.  ■
