OTTAWA, Oct. 8 (Xinhua) -- The number of arrest and detention cases involving Canadian citizens in the United States surged by nearly 60 percent in the last fiscal year, according to an official consular report released Thursday by Global Affairs Canada.
The annual consular affairs report recorded 557 cases of Canadians arrested or detained in the U.S. between April 2025 and March 2026, up from 361 cases reported during the previous fiscal period.
The spike occurred alongside a notable decline in cross-border travel. Total visits by Canadians to the U.S. dropped by 25 percent over the same period, falling from 26.8 million in 2024-2025 to 20 million in 2025-2026, according to local media.
Global Affairs Canada did not specify the factors driving the sharp rise in arrests and detentions. ■
