BAGHDAD, Oct. 8 (Xinhua) -- Iraq's national carrier Iraqi Airways resumed direct flights to Iran on Thursday, with a flight from Najaf International Airport to Tehran, the airline announced.
The flight schedule includes daily routes connecting Najaf with major Iranian destinations, including Tehran, Mashhad, and Isfahan, after necessary technical and regulatory requirements were completed, the airline said in a statement.
The step comes after direct air travel between the neighbors resumed on Sunday, when Najaf International Airport received a flight operated by Iran's Caspian Airlines under an official agreement between Baghdad and Washington to grant specific exemptions to operate the routes.
Najaf International Airport suspended all flights to and from Iran on Sept. 25, after the U.S. Treasury Department imposed sanctions on Iran's aviation sector. ■
