ULAN BATOR, Oct. 8 (Xinhua) -- A man in his 40s was killed and a woman in her 50s was seriously injured in a bear attack in Ulan Bator, the capital of Mongolia, the country's National Police Agency said Thursday.
The incident occurred overnight from Wednesday to Thursday in a traditional Mongolian round-shaped dwelling known as a ger, on the outskirts of Bayanzurkh district in the capital.
The injured woman is in serious condition and is receiving treatment at the National Center for Traumatology Research.
Authorities are searching for the bear that attacked the two people.
Bear sightings in and around residential areas across Mongolia have continued in recent months, prompting authorities to warn the public to remain vigilant and take precautions to reduce potential risks.
Experts say encounters between bears and livestock, as well as bear sightings in residential areas, have increased in recent years. They attribute the trend to several factors, including climate change, food shortages in bears' natural habitats and the overexploitation of natural resources. ■
