WELLINGTON, Oct. 8 (Xinhua) -- Authorities have confirmed a new measles case in Wellington, New Zealand's capital, linked to recent international travel.

The National Public Health Service is supporting the case and close contacts to help prevent further spread of the highly contagious disease and is identifying locations of interest visited by the person while infectious, Health New Zealand said in a statement on Thursday.

Medical officer of health for Greater Wellington Craig Thornley urged people to remain vigilant, saying measles could be brought into New Zealand at any time as people travel or return from overseas during the school holidays.

Symptoms include fever, cough, a runny nose or red eyes, followed by a rash that usually starts on the face, Thornley said, adding that immunization is the best protection against measles. ■
