ULAN BATOR, Oct. 7 (Xinhua) -- Mongolia has welcomed 856,636 foreign tourists since the beginning of this year, surpassing the total number of international tourist arrivals recorded throughout last year, local media reported Wednesday, citing the Mongolian Tourism Organization.

The Asian country received more than 847,000 foreign tourists in 2025, marking a 5-percent increase from the previous year.

According to the tourism organization, Russia, China, and South Korea were the top source markets for inbound tourists during the period.

The Mongolian government views tourism as a key sector for diversifying the country's economy, which has traditionally relied heavily on mining exports.

However, Mongolia's tourism industry has long faced seasonal challenges due to the country's harsh continental climate, characterized by long, severe winters and relatively short summers.

To address these challenges, the government has been promoting the development of year-round tourism. As part of this effort, it has extended its "Years to Visit Mongolia" campaign through 2028, with a goal of attracting at least one million foreign visitors annually. ■
