WELLINGTON, Oct. 6 (Xinhua) -- A large vegetation fire at Walter Peak Station on the shores of Lake Wakatipu near Queenstown of New Zealand was burning on steep slopes on Tuesday, with smoke visible across the lake.
At 3:00 p.m. local time, the fire covered 146 hectares with a perimeter of almost 6 km and had since grown, Radio New Zealand (RNZ) reported.
Three areas of active fire had been identified and the blaze was not contained, but efforts to protect the Walter Peak homestead and nearby buildings had been successful, RNZ reported, adding that operations, supported by six helicopters, will resume Wednesday morning. ■
